In honor of Earth Day, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment teamed-up with the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester in Mount Kisco to provide hands-on ?green? workshops for the Club?s 3-12-year-olds.
During the morning, 3-5-year-olds from the Club?s preschool classes worked with Cherie Ingraham, founder, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment, to create container gardens from recycled materials. Students used images from recycled newspapers and magazines, soy crayons and eco-friendly markers to decorate their creations in which they later planted organic flower seeds. Throughout the morning, Ingraham spoke with students about why we celebrate Earth Day, the importance of being kind and gentle to Mother Earth and how they can start to ?go green? at home.
?It is important for children to learn to appreciate and take good care of Mother Earth at a young age,? said Cherie Ingraham, founder, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment. ?Whether it?s recycling their coloring books or turning off the water while they brush their teeth, their small steps can help to make a positive impact on the environment. By working with the children on Earth Day, I hope to inspire a lifetime of good, ?green,? habits and teach them the importance of celebrating our planet.?
Following her work with the preschoolers, Ingraham spent the afternoon working with the Club?s 5-12-year-olds (grades K-6). The activity kicked-off with the children sharing the ways that they are kind, gentle and respectful to Mother Earth each day. Ingraham then showed students how to create photo frames from recycled materials, including items found in nature, such as twigs and rocks, as well as common household items, such as yarn, old newspapers and magazines.
?We are grateful to Cherie Ingraham and the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment for taking the time to work with our children and supporting our 2010 Humanitarian Award Dinner theme, ?Sustain,? which celebrates our Club?s goal to preserve, protect, and nurture the youngest generation with healthy nutrition, ?green? living, and renewable energy initiatives,? said Brian Skanes, executive director, Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester. ?The workshops helped the children to understand the importance of ?green? living and we hope that they will carry these environmentally-friendly lessons with them for years to come.?
To help the children go ?green? and celebrate Mother Earth throughout the year, the Chuckie Goodnight Foundation For The Environment gave each child an Earth Journal, to document their good, ?green? work and a copy of is 2010 Earth Calendar, which recognizes several environmental holidays, is printed on recycled paper with soy ink and features environmentally-friendly artwork from children across the U.S. collected through its annual Earth Day Everyday contest.
Teachers were also given copies of the 2010 Earth Calendar as well as the Foundation?s 12? x 18? posters, which feature Chuckie Goodnight and his crew of loyal plant and animal friends working to preserve and protect the environment, for their classrooms. Each poster features eco-friendly messaging and highlights the simple things children can do to take good care of Mother Earth. Designs include: Choose Organic; Save Water; Think & Choose; and, The 4R?s.

The latest trend in building, both residential and commercial, is green construction. Earth friendly, sustainable construction is being hailed as the way of the future. Major changes in the way buildings are constructed as well as in the materials used are becoming a priority for many people.
Green homes can be vastly different from traditional homes. Several trends have become industry standard and are helping make the homes more energy efficient and healthier. Here are a few of the major features you are likely to find in a green building.
Steel frames, which are stronger and more sustainable than wood are replacing the traditional wood framed models. Steel is also impervious to mold, making it a healthier choice.
Heating and air conditioning systems are now coming with HEPA filters installed. The filters can reduce many of the allergens found in our homes.
Special energy efficient windows have greatly reduced the amount of air exchange, making the homes easier to heat and cool. These windows also block out UV rays.
Kitchen and bathroom sinks are being fitted with filters, purifying municipal water supplies that are dropping in purity.Traditional carpeting and vinyl flooring is being replaced with ceramic tiles or hardwood flooring. Carpets are notorious for their off gassing and are extremely difficult to keep clean.
A green house can be slightly more expensive during initial construction, but the energy savings can make up for the costs rapidly. Long term benefits make the homes appealing to many people. If you currently have a home and aren’t planning on building a new one, there are several improvements you can make on your current home to make it greener and more efficient. Here are some of the most popular.
Cotton insulation can be installed in place of traditional fiberglass types. Cotton is just as effective but much safer and more Earth friendly.
If you must replace your roof, opt for redwood shingles that are reclaimed from old lumber. These shingles prevent the destruction of thousands of trees each year and are beautiful.
Traditional smoke detectors use radioactive materials which are certainly not Earth friendly. New models avoid these impossible to dispose of isotopes.
Improve your home’s air quality by replacing ordinary heating and air conditioning filters with HEPA filters.
When it comes time to replace that old, dirty carpet, replace it with ceramic tiles. These are the trend in modern design and are much healthier, especially for those who suffer from allergies. The green movement is here to stay. Even if you aren’t overly concerned about global warming, the health benefits gained from modern construction methods can make green right for you.

The Guardian Trust, a public/private partnership to provide accountable, on-going land use and engineering controls and to enable trustworthy redevelopment of environmentally contaminated properties, was announced today by Theodore W. Kheel, President of Earth Pledge, a non-profit organization nationally recognized as a leader in sustainable development programs.
In making the announcement, Mr. Kheel said: There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of contaminated properties throughout the United States. The Guardian Trust will provide a viable new solution to meet the need for effective oversight of contaminated sites, and, hopefully prevent potential environmental disaster. The benefit of The Guardian Trust in addressing this problem is fourfold:
1. To protect human health and the environment by preventing improper usage of environmentally contaminated sites and assuring the integrity of remedial solutions.
2. To provide financial assurances for the long-term stewardship of properties.
3. To facilitate the ability of owners to transfer sites to buyers.
4. To allow companies to safely end their active day-to-day management of contaminated properties and focus on their core business strategies.
To manage a program of this magnitude, Earth Pledge has selected Guardian Trust Management Services, an affiliate of MGP Environmental Partners LLC. The Guardian Trust is an outgrowth of a pilot study funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Also participating in the study were the United States Navy, the Maryland Department of the Environment and the California Environmental Protection Agency. The pilot study looked at innovative approaches to solving problems associated with land use and engineering controls at sites where contamination remains behind after the initial clean up. The vast majority of all environmental clean ups use risk based methods.
MGP Environmental Partners, whose mission is to use private sector approaches to solve complex issues involved in the transaction and redevelopment of contaminated sites, developed the concept of The Guardian Trust under the leadership of Bruce-Sean Reshen, MGPs Chief Executive Officer. Joining Mr. Kheel and Earth Pledge Executive Director Leslie Hoffman at the announcement, Mr. Reshen said, Our experience confirms that brownfields issues can only be solved through the multi-faceted integration of engineering, land use, risk management, and real estate development. We believe that our experience in managing complex redevelopment properties, along with the unparalleled reputation of Earth Pledge as a leader in bringing innovative sustainable approaches to this nation, will make The Guardian Trust program a successful initiative for all interested parties. Ms. Hoffman added, Clearly The Guardian Trust is a perfect complement to Earth Pledges current initiatives Green Roofs, Farm to Table and Waste=Fuel and we look forward to a long, successful program under the management of MGP.
About Earth Pledge
Earth Pledge is a New York City-based nonprofit organization that originated in 1991 as a United Nations committee chaired by prominent New York attorney Theodore W. Kheel to promote interest in the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Earth Pledge identifies and promotes innovative techniques and technologies that restore the balance between human and natural systems. Through demonstration, education and research, Earth Pledge delivers viable models to government, industry and communities.
About MGP Environmental Partners LLC
Founded in 1997, MGP Environmental Partners LLC, based in Stamford, CT, is a nationally known real estate consulting and management firm, with clients in both the public and private sectors. Its Principals and Staff proven experts in real estate, engineering, risk management, finance, information technology and especially brownfields remediation bring to bear on the management of The Guardian Trust an extraordinary track record of success. Under the leadership of its CEO, Bruce-Sean Reshen a noted expert on Institutional Controls who has been actively speaking and writing on the subject for more than 10 years MGP has led the effort to establish The Guardian Trust.
About Institutional Controls
In January 1996, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established new guidelines for the redevelopment of environmentally contaminated sites that sought to prevent situations such as Love Canal. These guidelines utilize Engineering Controls (ECs) (e.g.: pump and treat methods for groundwater and landfill caps for soil) and Land Use Controls (LUCs) (e.g.: easements and deed restrictions). These controls are also known in combination as Institutional Controls (ICs).
However, in order for ICs to be successful, there needs to be oversight to inspect, monitor and report on properties for as long as 30 years, or more. Traditionally, this oversight has been left to the owner of the site in varying combinations with the appropriate government agency. However, when ownership of the site changes hands (which frequently happens) there is no certain mechanism in place to make sure that the new owner (or any subsequent owner) will even know and/or abide by the institutional controls placed on the site. As a result, enforcement of the ICs is uncertain, regional inconsistencies exist, and there is no uniform approach for notice, monitoring and reporting of ICs.
